The Battle of Monongahela, also known as the Battle of the Wilderness, took place on July 9, 1755 at Braddock's Field which is now Braddock, Pennsylvania. The British consisted of 1,300 regulars as the French side of the army consisted of 637 natives, 108 troupes de la Marine, and 146 militia, totaling to 891. The French and Indians arrived to late too ambush the British, so as the British saw them through the trees, they opened fire. British early shooting killed Captain Beaujeu, but this did not worry the Indians as they continued fighting. As the British were under heavy fire, Thomas Gage, the captain of the front line, ordered his men to retreat, as they were suffering many casualties. By this time, the Indians were on the British sides and flanks firing down upon them, so Braddock attempted to push his men forward to continue fighting.
This was a huge mistake, because French regulars were advancing up the road, which pushed Braddock and his men back. The British were holding their position and after three brutal hours, General Braddock was shot in the lungs by Thomas Fausett, which instantly caused his army to fall apart. The British picked up Braddock and everyone immediately began to fall back. They reached the Monongahela River, but as they got there they were attacked by Indians with tomahawks and scalping knives. This caused the British to run away as they were about to be brutally massacred.
The British lost a total of 456 men and 422 were wounded. On the contrary, the French and Indians only lost 30 men and 57 were wounded. Braddock ended up dying four days after the battle as he could not recover from his wound. This battle is marked as one of the worst battle defeats in British history.
