**This picture is a reenactment at the site of the Attack of German Flatts**
The Attack of German Flatts took place on November 12, 1757 in the British Province of New York. At 3am, French commander Belestre ordered an attack on the German Flatts north of the village. The Flatts quickly surrendered, as their five buildings were almost immediately destroyed. Forty people were killed, and near 100 women and children were taken captive back to Montreal. Some people fled across the Mohawk field to Fort Herkimer, and the fort commander sent out a unit of 50 men to see what they could find. They retreated quickly after exchanging gunfire with Belestre's unit.
Most of the prisoners were then later exchanged for prisoners being held by the British. Those from the German Flatts returned to that location and rebuilt their settlement. It was then destroyed again during the American Revolutionary War in 1778.
